CFBB supports sound Science and community and Industry participation

At this stage, CFBB’s focus is on ensuring that decisions affecting Bristol Bay’s fish, fishing communities and economy are based on sound science and that fishermen, fishing communities, Tribes, and other potentially affected people have a meaningful opportunity to participate in the permitting process.

CFBB believes there is a responsibility to weigh the important energy benefits to Nushagak communities, with potential impacts to salmon and the people and businesses that depend on them. We believe those potential benefits and impacts must be fully understood before decisions are made.

CFBB is reviewing the project's technical studies with fisheries and technical experts and is advocating for a transparent process, meaningful public participation, and the best available science.

Where does the project stand?

The Nuyakuk project is being considered by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) through its Licensing Process. Nushagak Electric has completed the major pre-application studies required under the process and has now filed a Draft License Application (DLA) with FERC. (FERC, Integrated Licensing Process; Nuyakuk Updated Study Report, December 2024)

The DLA is an important opportunity for the public to review the applicant's proposed project, studies, and conclusions and to identify concerns before FERC moves forward with its environmental review and consideration of a final license application.

The current 90-day public comment period on the Draft License Application is open through November 16, 2026.

Comments submitted during this period become part of the official FERC administrative record and can help inform the Commission's review of the project. (Nushagak Electric & Telephone Cooperative, Nuyakuk Hydro Project; FERC Project No. P-14873)
